About Us

amité in the Spotlight

Helen gained years of experience organizing social events when she founded and ran a highly successful club for single people in the Plymouth area back in the early 90′s. When she was selected by the BBC to do the documentary Ditch The Day Job, she saw it as a great opportunity to develop her concept further.

You may have been among the millions of people all over Britain who watched the programme on BBC2 as the story of Amité was shown from its first conception to its launch Ball which was a fabulous and glittering success, attended by over 300 people. The Programme was also TV Pick of the Day in many of the National papers, including the Telegraph and The Mail.

Two of Devon’s most prestigious glossy publications, Devon life and Devon Today, have featured Helen in full page editorials.

The Amité Valentines Ball held at Boringdon Hall was featured on Westcountry TV. Helen has appeared many times in both local and regional press and she has done many interviews over the years for radio. Helen has met many legendary people. One of the most memorable was meeting Princess Anne!

Helen is very proud that Amité members have raised many hundreds of pounds for local charities, including The Devon Air Ambulance, BBC Chestnut Appeal and the Neo-natal ICU at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth.

A note from Helen :

When you are over thirty five and single it can be very difficult to meet new people and enjoy a full social life. This is why, on Valentines Day 2004, I launched Amité with a spectacular Ball… a perfect beginning.

Meeting new people in a friendly social atmosphere, is a much nicer way than using impersonal on-line dating sites. Over the years, thousands of people have joined amité from all over the Southwest bringing single people together who otherwise would never have met.

The name Amité (pronounced am-me-tay) is the old French word for friendship and I am delighted to have been a part of the incalculable new friendships, romances and marriages since Amité began 10 years ago.

I look forward to meeting and welcoming you to an event in the near future.

Testimonials from amité members

Matt -Amité has changed my life! Thank you for another fantastic evening, the food was superb, the music brilliant, and the company just perfect.

Sarah from Exeter and Mike from Plymouth now married. They met on an Amité Car Treasure hunt!  -If we hadn’t have joined amité, we certainly would never have met!

Jane -I can not believe that it took me so long to pluck up the courage to join amité! It is the best thing I have ever done since becoming single. I didn’t join to meet someone; I just wanted to enjoy my weekends instead of doing nothing in particular! And wow how my life has changed! Not only have I made loads of new friends but I have met that someone special too!

Chris -After spending months on expensive internet dating sites and after several horrendous dates, I took the plunge and joined amité. At my second event I met my new partner and we are now engaged. Thank you so much Helen & Hosts.

Emma -Thanks Helen for a wicked night, you’re a star!
