The Organisation
EDF Energy is a British integrated energy company, wholly owned by the French state-owned EDF (Électricité de France). Their main operations are electricity generation and the sale of natural gas and electricity to homes and businesses throughout the United Kingdom. They pride themselves with their strong emphasis on renewable sources of energy.
The organisation employs around 12,000 people, and handles over 5 million business and residential customer accounts.
The Challenge
When EDF came to us, they were already managing their main pay review through an existing HR system. However, due to the complexity of the salary and bonus rules, their executive review was run using spreadsheets.
Because of this, the creation and management of these spreadsheets had become a massive burden in two significant ways:
It required a senior reward manager with expert level Excel skills to build and maintain the spreadsheets.
It drained the main reward team’s resources by drawing them into the day-to-day management of the review, rather than this responsibility resting with business level HR teams.
The first issue created a business risk. A single point of failure existed in a business critical process, with only one person having the skills and knowledge to maintain the spreadsheets. The second issue saw a significant cost in using high level resource that could be deployed on higher value activity.
The Solution
We worked with EDF Energy to build all the functionality they required into our PayReview software solution. The custom calculation functionality meant we could factor in their complex business rules, and the system’s flexibility allowed for the inclusion of their compa ratios.
We continue to update and maintain the review each year to meet EDF’s needs. The software includes controls to ensure the complex rules are applied correctly and the spend remains within budget. The PayReview software also controls who sees what data, and how the review progresses through a number of levels of authorisation to the final approval stage.
The Result
EDF Energy now have a robust pay review solution for their executive review. It no longer ties up valuable reward team resource while empowering the business HR Directors to act independently.
